Welcome to Veterinary Holistic Care! We take the time to examine your pet. On your first visit, your pet will be examined thoroughly, and diagnostic tests, such as radiographs and blood work may be recommended. You will be asked many questions about your pet, so it is important to complete our Patient Intake Form (pdf) and our Client Intake Form (pdf) as fully and accurately as possible and to bring with you any records of previous treatment, vaccinations and/or diagnostic work-ups. Please also bring any medications or supplements your pet is currently on. We will recommend the best treatments for your pet. After this, our doctors will determine the best treatment for your pet, including diet modification, nutritional supplements, and one or more holistic modalities: acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, Chinese or Western herbs, energy healing, massage, flower essences and others. We make sure that our clients are very involved with the health of their pets.
This team effort is the key to our success.
Appointment Policy and Fee Structure
Your pet’s first visit will involve an Initial Holistic Consultation which usually takes between 1 and 1 ½ hours depending on the age of the animal and the complexity of the case. One of our doctors will conduct a comprehensive, medical examination which includes a physical examination of your pet’s overall physical and emotional health, assessment of your pet’s diet, assessment of any symptoms exhibited and possibly recommendations for laboratory or other diagnostic testing.
The doctor will ask you many questions about your pet’s behavior and health. Your pet will receive the doctor’s full attention and the time necessary for optimal treatment. This means that we need to charge by the time it takes to conduct the examination. Every effort will be made to limit the duration of an appointment to the allotted time. However, it may not always be possible to provide the necessary care within that time frame. If a specific case requires additional time, additional charges may apply or we may think it best to schedule a follow-up appointment. Our doctors’ main goal is to provide the best medical care possible for each pet at each appointment.
Sometimes, a case work-up is needed for advanced pathology cases (for records review, consultation with specialists, research time or other) since they require more time to assess the individual case and treatment. Many drugs commonly prescribed in conventional veterinary medicine can have side effects: to assess the symptoms that may be brought about by the drugs, further research may be warranted.
Progress exams usually last between ½ hour to 1 hour and are scheduled within a week or several weeks of the initial consultation, as needed. Some holistic treatments may be scheduled at weekly intervals in order to provide the best efficacy.
We also offer Phone Consultations as a follow-up service for patients seen within the last few weeks. Please note that we are not able to offer Phone Consultations for new health problems.
Please feel free to call (301) 656-2882 for further details about our fees.
At Veterinary Holistic Care, your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you and your pet to provide sufficient time to examine your pet and discuss your pet’s condition and treatment options in detail with you. Our veterinarians only see one new patient at a time, usually for a full hour to an hour and a half. Other appointments range from 30 minutes to 45 minutes. If you do not show up for an appointment, your veterinarian cannot see someone else.
As a courtesy, you will always be called/emailed a day or two before an appointment to confirm it. As in other medical practices, missed appointments – those not canceled 24 business hours in advance (Saturday for Tuesday’s appointment) will be billed a minimum of $50 to your account. Surgery appointments require 48 hours notice, otherwise a $100 fee will be applied.
Please note: New clients must call and leave a message canceling their first appointment 48 business hours prior to their scheduled appointment (Friday for Tuesday’s appointment); otherwise your credit card will be charged a missed appointment fee of $100.
